2.3 Background

Slicker

Every character comes from somewhere. Were you raised in a wasteland village just trying to succeed (survivor)? Perhaps you grew up in a sheltered agrarian homestead that rejected the ‘evils’ of the Ancients (simple). Or maybe you are from a bustling trade centre built on the ruins of an ancient city (slicker).

Your background defines your character as a personality and sets the stage for your behavior, beliefs, and ethical code. In game terms, your background determines Attribute modifiers, your level of technology, starting languages, and can grant special abilities or restrictions.

Additional PC backgrounds will become available during play.

Survivor:

The ‘default’ background in Scorched Earth, survivors are the ordinary denizens who inhabit the rebuilt towns and hardscrabble villages that are scattered throughout the wastes. Survivor characters receive a basic education and are familiar with retro-fitted and scavenged technology.

Game Rule Information:

Survivors possess the following background traits:

Attribute Modifiers: Survivors receive no bonuses or penalties to their Attributes.

Tech Level: Survivors possess the ‘Retro-Tech’ trait and can select proficiencies or talents accordingly.

Automatic Language: Unislang. Gutterspeak and the High Tongue are also widely spoken.

Simple:

The ‘simple’ folk of Scorched Earth merely try to survive and remain self-sufficient. Many simples blame the Ancients for the destruction of the world and now seek to rebuild and preserve it by progressing only to a point they deem ‘natural’. They use hand-woven fabrics and natural weapons and tools. Such groups either shun pre-Fall technology or actively seek to eradicate it.

Game Rule Information:

Simples possess the following background traits:

Attribute Modifiers: Add one (+1) to Endurance but subtract one (-1) from Intellect. Simple characters are tough and self-sufficient, but often reject learning of any sort.

Tech Level: Simple characters are Primitive and cannot start with any proficiencies or talents requiring Retro-Tech or higher.

Automatic Language: Unislang. Tribal is also quite common among simples.

Tech Foe: Simples gain a +1 damage bonus with Primitive-Tech weapons against Advanced-Tech foes. This includes robots, androids, soldiers in powered armour, or even an otherwise primitive enemy with a blaster or other Advanced-Tech weapon.

Slicker:

Slickers (short for ‘city-slickers’) inhabit the ruined cities and towns that are scattered throughout the wastes. Raised in these ‘necropoli’, the character received a basic education and is familiar with retro-fitted and scavenged technology. Slickers tend to think of survivors and other wasteland-dwellers as backwards, while simples and tribals are considered dangerous barbarians.

Game Rule Information:

Slickers possess the following background traits:

Attribute Modifiers: Add one (+1) to Charisma but subtract one (-1) from Endurance. Due to their urban upbringing, slickers are accustomed to dealing with others; unfortunately necropoli are not the healthiest places to be raised.

Tech Level: Slickers possess the ‘Retro-Tech’ trait and can select proficiencies or talents accordingly.

Automatic Language: Unislang. Gutterspeak is also widely known. Slickers are more likely than other characters to be literate.

Slicker Sense: Accustomed to living in ruins, the slicker gains a +2 bonus on Perception checks to avoid potential mishaps from damaged structures.
